Combined shows a triple treat of inspiring building and home improvement concepts
Inspiration and information are the key words underlining the purpose of the 2008 Master Builders Building and Home Improvement Show at the Adelaide Showground, Wayville next Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 11-13).
In the warmth of the showground’s pavilions, the show will bring together leading designers, manufacturers and builders for a vast showcase of latest concepts and products in home building, renovation and furnishing.
The show will again be brought to you by the Master Builders Association, which sets the highest possible standards in the building and construction industry.
The traditional quality and diversity of the show will be further enhanced with the incorporated Plumbing Expo and the new Technology Show supported by Adam Internet. “Now in its sixth year, the show continues to grow in status as South Australia’s pre-eminent building and home improvement event,” said Rob Stewart, Chief Executive Officer of the Master Builders Association. “People who are seriously interested in building and renovating will be inspired and motivated by the exhibits and information with industry experts available to spend time helping them to make informed decisions.”
The show is presented by Kym Jones Exhibitions, which has a proud record of exhibitions aimed at promoting outstanding local companies and improving the home lifestyles of South Australians. “Increasingly people are looking for environmentally sustainable building products and energy efficiency ideas and this will be a particular focus of the show,” Kym Jones said. “The plumbing component in particular will help people to make the right choices in water saving measures for the home and garden.”

French provincial style in painting and decorating
French provincial colours and paint finishes will be one of the most fascinating features of the Building and Home Improvement Show.
Gary Lancaster of the Master Builders Association will run a series of Living Home Workshops designed to help people create old worldly charm.
Demonstrations on the latest trends in paints and painting styles will include transforming new furniture to make it look old and “more homely.”
There will also be a showcase of French trowel-on paints and gold leaf decorative finishes.
“The objective will be to help people develop do-it-yourself skills and apply them in their own homes,” Gary said.
Europe is driving the trend towards more environmentally-friendly water-based paints with some brilliant new colours and styles that will be unveiled at the Building and Home Improvement Show.
Other enthralling presentations will include paint applications to plaster columns to make them look like real marble, and demonstrations of flock wall papering to create a “shaggy carpet finish” on feature walls.
Gary will also remind people that the best results are created through appropriate preparation of surfaces, and demonstrations will include practical tips on filling holes and flushing gyprock and plasterboard.
Demonstrations will be held daily at 11.30am and 3.00pm in the Wayville Pavilion.
“The shows are all about interaction and helping people to go home with great ideas,” Gary said.

Assured of a solid reputation with steel-framed homes
Nothing beats a solid reputation, and that’s why steel framed homes are growing in popularity.
In the interests of strength and long-term stability, steel is a wise choice.
It does not deteriorate, shrink, warp, rot, split, or crack. This means that wall cladding does not pull away from the studs, and cornices and ceilings do not sag.
Walls are always straight, and windows and doors slide perfectly.
Termites are also a big consideration with steel framework offering a big advantage over timber.
Nu Steel Homes has been integrating superb technology and materials with smart designs in steel-framed homes since 1981.
The company, based at Greenfields, uses only high tensile steel produced and developed by Bluescope (formerly B.H.P).
Frames are pre-fabricated and all components are made to measure for assembly.
Nu Steel’s Sales and Marketing Manager, Colin Kearvel, said the Building and Home Improvement Show offered the company a great opportunity to promote the flexibility of its products.
“We can supply all materials in kit form to be put together, construct a home to the lock-up stage, or complete a fully-built dwelling,” he said.
“Our systems offer people significant cost advantages to build the home they have always wanted, whether in classic or contemporary style, and our innovative designs can be adapted to sloping blocks.”
The Nu Steel Homes display will be in the Wayville Pavilion.

Great paving outcomes from good preparation
Quality paving can bring style, safety and functionality to your home, and it is relatively easy to do yourself with the right approach.
At the Building and Home Improvement Show, Noarlunga Paving Centre will present daily demonstrations on paving techniques to help people get started with their do-it-yourself projects.
The company is widely recognised for its paving and retaining wall products and expertise to enhance homes and lifestyles.
The demonstrations in the Jubilee Pavilion will highlight that the best results come from appropriate preparation of the base and establishing correct levels.
Careful planning and taking your time to create the desired results are essential elements of a fine paving project.
A variety of pavers will be featured at special prices to show people the different dimensions that can be brought to their driveways and outdoor living areas.
The paving demonstrations will be at 11.30 am and 2.00 pm on Friday, and at 11.30am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The importance of energy efficiency, renewable energy and electrical safety
The Building Home and Improvement Show will provide people with a great opportunity to learn more about
- energy efficiency;
- renewable energy;
- new hot water standards; and
- electrical safety and electrical certificates of compliance.
The Energy Division of the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure will have a major display built around an innovative energy information trailer.
The trailer showcases photovoltaic technology and explains the benefits of sound residential energy efficiency practices and actions.
Interactive models incorporated in the trailer cover energy efficient lighting, water efficient shower heads, home design orientation and appliance running costs.
The display also provides information for property owners on requirements to receive compliance certificates for all electrical work they have done, and examples of non-compliant electrical work that could result in an electrical incident occurring.
Energy efficiency and safety literature, including information about new Hot Water Standards and changes to the State Government Solar Hot Water Rebate Scheme, both effective 1 July 2008,will be provided by Energy Division staff.
Building for environmentally sustainable living
Energy efficient building practices will be a key focus at this years Master Builders Building and Home Improvement Show.
“Increasing numbers of South Australians are interested in environmentally sustainable homes,” said Rob Stewart, Chief Executive Officer of the Master Builders Association.
“The Association, and its 2,200 members, will continue to lead the way and set the course for future green building practices in this State.”
Association members, including builders and tradespeople, will be present during the three days of the show to answer questions and assist people planning a building or renovation project.
The Master Builders Association is showcasing environmentally building initiatives in a major home development at Blackwood Park.
An eight-star eco-home is being built with businesses donating materials including underground water tanks, solar panels, bricks, fixtures and landscaping.
Eco-friendly building concepts will be displayed in each room of the home.
Once the show home has been completed, it will be auctioned with net proceeds going to the Craniofacial Foundation.
“It is this type of innovative, environmentally friendly construction that we will be highlighting at the Building and Home Improvement Show,” Mr Stewart said.
The Master Builders Association will also present a comprehensive seminar program with topics including:
- Getting started with your building project;
- Bathroom renovations;
- Kitchen design;

Thriving and drought resistant gardens by design
Developing a drought resistant garden that will thrive despite water restrictions largely starts with soil preparation.
At the Building and Home Improvement Show, specialist garden design company, Living Pictures, will help people to make the right decisions to develop delightful and productive gardens suited to South Australia’s climate.
Principal designer Tony Stanton said it was vital to create a well-drained soil that retained water at depth.
“Poorly trained and unskilled landscapers often install gardens over thin layers of imported loam,” he explained.
“This is a recipe for high water use and poorly growing plants. Once the soil has been properly prepared and the plants are in, the next most important step is to mulch.
“Most people put mulch on too thinly and fail to maintain it. Again this costs money through evaporation of water.
“Most plants need a depth of 300mm of well-drained soil to grow well. Ideally, the soil should be approximately 40 per cent clay, 40 per cent sand and 20 per cent organic material with air and water spaces.
“Most of the Adelaide Plains feature an alkali clay-based soil, while the coastal strip is sand or sandy loam. The Adelaide Hills are largely acid clays.
“To improve clays, we need to add sand and aged compost. To improve sandy soils, we add aged compost because it is nearly impossible to add clay to sand.
“In practical terms, we add 100mm of sand and 50mm of aged compost over the clay soil and dig in to a depth of 300mm. On sand, we add 100mm of aged compost and dig in to the same depth.
“Finally the improved soil is rotary hoed and you are ready to plant. Planting holes should be the same depth as the potting mix the plant comes in, but should be about twice as wide as the pot. This will give the roots an easy time as they grow outwards.
“Once the planting is complete, we need to add mulch at a depth of 75mm to 100mm. Finely chopped organic material will do, except pine needles or gum leaves, which will inhibit your plants.”
Tony adds that practical aspects of garden design take into account wind, shade, gradient or slope, drainage, and irrigation.
The Living Pictures display will be in the Wayville Pavilion.

Home harmony and energy efficiency with Feng Shui
People applying Feng Shui in their homes can achieve new levels of energy efficiency, according to a leading exponent of the ancient Chinese art.
At the Building and Home Improvement Show, Hermann von Essen, Principal of the Feng Shui Training Centre of South Australia, will demonstrate the principles of creating harmony with the environment while embracing natural energy.
Feng Shui is practised around the world in homes and businesses with the application of shapes, colours and natural energy flows. This includes building design in relation to the sun, decorations, placement of furniture and mirrors to capture and direct energy.
“We live with highly advanced technologies and modern conveniences, but Feng Shui can enhance quality of life through harmonious design, healthy building materials, and floor plans that embrace natural energy,” Hermann explained.
“Whether it is a home or an office, people need harmony and a supportive environment.
“Apart from generating a healthy living environment, Feng Shui design can be energy efficient, and achieve considerable savings on electricity and gas bills.
“Feng Shui can also be applied to match individual tastes in colour schemes, selection of furnishing and decorations.”
At the Building and Home Improvement Show, Hermann will present daily workshops at 11.00 am, 12.30 pm, 2.00 pm and 3.30pm on the Feng Shui Stage in the Jubilee Pavilion.
“While Feng Shui principles can be applied to existing homes or extensions, the most effective results are often achieved before plans are presented for building approval,” Hermann said.
He will discuss with show visitors how to get the most out of Feng Shui investment.
People are encouraged to bring their existing floor plans or sketches and have them analysed from a Feng Shui perspective.

Highlighting the importance of quality plumbing and gasfitting in your home
While beautiful home extensions or renovations may be monuments to their designers and builders, there are usually underlying champions of a word that matters most – functionality!Consumers also tend to overlook or underestimate the importance of these champions, without whom they would not enjoy the fundamental things that turn a building into a home.
Plumbers are the people that system homes for water supply and distribution.
Without professional plumbing, the efficiency of homes and the health and safety of families would be threatened.
Just as importantly, plumbers can help homeowners to make a personal and profound contribution to energy efficiency and water conservation.
This will be one of the key themes of the Plumbing Expo being presented in association with the Building and Home Improvement Show.
The Plumbing Industry Association of South Australia promotes the protection of community health and safety through the provision of quality plumbing services for water and gas.
Paul Worthington, the Association’s Marketing and Membership Manager, said professional plumbers and gasfitters had embraced new technologies allowing people to make the most of their budget when building and renovating.
“The Expo will allow our members to demonstrate the importance of quality plumbing and fittings from a structural perspective, and the benefits delivered in terms of lifestyles at home,” he said.
“Plumbing Industry Association members will be available to talk to people about systems and the latest designs in tap ware and sanitary ware that can enhance functionality, save precious resources, and add value to the home.
“Plumbing is a major component of a building or renovation investment, and it must be done properly.
“This includes effective stormwater management to ensure that water does not find its way into wall cavities and under foundations, thereby threatening the structural integrity of a building.”
The Plumbing Expo will also provide an opportunity for the Association to demonstrate ecologically sustainable plumbing systems to help people use water cost effectively and reduce carbon emissions.
The Plumbing Expo will also have a trade focus with appeal for plumbers interested in further training programs, and to young people interested in a career in this important field.
People attending the Building and Home Improvement Show will have free entry to the Plumbing Expo in the Wayville Pavilion.
